Insurance issues surrounding e-commerce

Before the advent of e-commerce, sales time was spent on helping clients select traditional coverages, such as the following:
  • Property
  • Business Income
  • General Liability
  • Workers Compensation
  • Group Health

Computer and crime coverages were a secondary coverage issue. And if anyone asked about Intellectual Property coverage, there was a good chance that the response they heard was, "What's that?"

Now that e-commerce has become a de facto part of business-as-normal, sales time has shifted to emphasize less traditional coverages for the online side of an enterprise's operations. Common risk areas for e-commerce are:
  • Computers and other hardware / software
  • Power related issues
  • Equipment breakdown issues
  • Crime coverages such as Computer Fraud
  • Intellectual Property coverages
  • Advertisers Liability
  • Multi-media Liability

Businesses are searching the insurance marketplace for new cyberspace products, as they are eager to protect their online operations. Let's take a closer look at the key exposures facing these companies and the solutions being offered by the insurance industry.
